News : 2. Bundesliga: Bochum and Fürth manage promotion – sport

VfL Bochum is back in the Bundesliga after an eleven year absence. With the 3-1 (1-0) win on the last match day against SV Sandhausen, the team secured the second division championship and will therefore compete in the first division in the coming season – for the first time since the 2009/2010 season. Sandhausen managed to stay up in league despite the defeat.

In the decisive game for promotion, Milos Pantovic brought coach Thomas Reis’ team into the lead (29th). Sandhausen striker Kevin Behrens scored after about an hour to equalize (59th), before VfL captain Anthony Losilla made the 2-1 (78th) and Robert Zulj (87th) finally increased with a remarkable free kick.

The Bochumers did not want to be influenced by the results on the other places in the decisive game. “We are only interested in our own result. If that fits, it doesn’t matter what happens elsewhere,” Reis said before the game. The failure of top performer Robert Tesche (5th yellow card) did not show the Bochumers in the first quarter of an hour, VfL pushed the guests deep into their own half from the start.

But Sandhausen had the best chance of the early stages: VfL goalkeeper Patrick Drewes only saved against Erik Zenga’s long-range shot and also parried the follow-up shot by Behrens (18th). Bochum then took the lead from a counter-attack situation: Simon Zoller was sent on the journey against the SVS defensive, which was far advanced, and Pantovic headed his cross to make it 1-0 (29th). The hosts remained the more dangerous team, Holtmann’s left-footed shot just missed the goal (38th). Pantovic then failed from a few meters to guest goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino (44th).

Bochum continued to dominate the game even after the break, but initially couldn’t create any top-class opportunities. Behrens shocked the leaders after about an hour when he passed a long ball past the storming Drewes and shot it from a very acute angle (59th).

After the equalizer, Sandhausen was better in the game, Daniel Keita-Ruel failed because of the strong Drewes (69th). Bochum caught up after a short period of weakness and scored through captain Losilla to make it 2-1 (78th). After Zulj’s artistic shot, VfL could no longer take the victory.

Fürth is promoted to the first division for the second time

SpVgg Greuther Fürth also fulfilled their dream of returning to the Bundesliga after eight years on the last matchday. Despite being outnumbered and twice behind in the season finale, the team of coach Stefan Leitl scored 3: 2 (0: 1) against Fortuna Düsseldorf and made his second first division promotion in the club’s history perfect after 2012. The Franks benefited from the simultaneous 2: 3 of rivals Holstein Kiel against Darmstadt 98.

With 64 points, Fürth advanced to the north German on the second promotion place. Düsseldorf finished the season in fifth place (56 points). Julian Green (69th) and Dickson Abiama (83rd) get the decisive hits from Fürth, who were outnumbered after Anton Stach’s red card (45th + 4). Kristoffer Peterson (26th) and Shinta Appelkamp (56th) scored for Fortuna, while Branimir Hrgota equalized for the first time for the hosts (54th, hand penalty after video evidence).

Even before the game, Leitl had emphasized that what had been achieved so far was “a sensation” and went on to say: “We are willing to do everything we can to get promoted to the 1st Bundesliga.” You could tell the hosts right from the start. Fürth started focused and had increasingly more possession. In the back, the hosts defended compactly and left Düsseldorf little room.

After a counterattack, however, met Peterson, who finished at the height of the penalty area. Fürth’s goalkeeper Sascha Burchert prevented another hit after a counterattack by Rouwen Hennings (35th). Despite the deficit, Fürth continued to play forward, but had to cope with Stach’s dismissal shortly before half-time, who, according to video evidence, saw the red card for grossly fouling Düsseldorf’s Appelkamp.

After the break, Fürth continued to apply pressure. Hrgota safely converted the penalty, but then Appelkamp used a Fortuna chance effectively. In a hectic final phase, the people of Fürth were rewarded for their sustained efforts: Green equalized from a short distance before Abiama finally set the course for the upper house.

Kiel must be in the relegation against 1. FC Köln

Meanwhile, the far north is worried about Holstein Kiel’s Bundesliga dream: Coach Ole Werner’s team is initially the loser in the promotion three-way battle in the second division. The team lost to Darmstadt 98 on matchday 34 with 2: 3 (1: 0) and gave the direct ticket for the first division despite the lead. The champion from 1912, who had impressively defied a mammoth program in the past few weeks, is now fighting in the relegation against 1. FC Köln on Wednesday and Saturday to be the first club from Schleswig-Holstein to play in the Bundesliga.

In 2018, the KSV just missed the leap up in the playoffs. Janni Serra headed Kiel early on (18th). Darmstadt’s top scorer Serdar Dursun hit back after the break with a brace (51st, 58th) and increased his account to 27 goals. Immanuel Höhn (75th) scored the third goal of the guests. Finn Bartels shortened for Kiel (87th). The city had dressed up in blue, white and red for the hoped-for festive day.

And Holstein started his final with fresh strength. After a grueling game plan as a result of the two quarantine situations, Werner’s team enjoyed a full week of training. For Kiel enormously important against the formally strong opponent around the former stork coach Markus Anfang. The first few minutes were extremely competitive, but Holstein gained slight advantages with active pressing and played forward in a controlled manner.

The hosts were careful to strike the right balance so as not to offer Darmstadt’s Dursun any space. Despite the great importance of the game, the hosts voluntarily waived the admission of some spectators. In front of the stadium, however, a large Holstein block cheered over the opening goal and cheered on the now visibly inspired Kiel professionals.

Darmstadt remained dangerous, Dursun had a great chance to equalize in the 30th minute. The home side deserved to take the lead in the half-time break, but after the restart Dursun played his qualities and Kiel began to tremble. Holstein was now insecure and the fans of the northern lights were increasingly hoping for a mistake from Fürth. Also because Serra missed a huge chance in the 73rd minute.
