Corona worries in Switzerland: Wengen race relocated to Kitzbühel

Due to the increasing number of corona infections in Switzerland, the Alpine World Cup races in Wengen have been canceled next weekend and moved to Kitzbühel. This was announced by the FIS World Ski Federation on January 11, 2021 after discussions with the Canton of Bern. The authorities had previously decided to cancel the classics on the Lauberhorn due to alarming Covid-19 numbers in the ski resort. The international teams were asked to stop their journey to Wengen on Monday morning.

The new plan now provides for two slaloms to be run in Kitzbühel on Saturday and Sunday. Two downhill runs and a Super-G on the Streif will follow on the following weekend. When and where the second Wengen run will be made up for remains open.

The situation in Wengen had worsened in the past few days. “The canton is concerned about the dynamism in which the virus is spread. Based on this fact, the health department assumes that the virus mutation from Great Britain in particular leads to this effect,” said the authority in Bern. Due to the development, it is not possible to adequately protect the athletes and supervisors in separate zones.

The canton reported more than 60 cases within the Wengen population in the past four weeks – after almost no infections had previously been reported. Apparently, many English guests were guests in Wengen on the holidays, who could have brought the new mutation of the corona virus, it was said last.

Because of Corona: International Ski Association adjusts racing calendar

In view of the dynamic global corona situation, the International Ski Federation FIS has made changes to its racing calendar for the 2020/2021 Alpine World Cup season. Accordingly, it was planned to hold both speed and technical races as well as women’s and men’s competitions as separately as possible. Several races were rescheduled and / or replaced by others.
