Angelique Kerber shows rising form before Wimbledon



Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber reached the semi-finals at the Mallorca grasshopper and showed good form just over a week before the start of the Grand Slam tournament in London. The German placed in first place defeated the French Caroline Garcia 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 5) and now meets the Swiss Belinda Bencic.

"It was a really tough game, I knew I had to play good tennis and I enjoy my stay here this week," said Kerber. In her opening match on Thursday she won sovereign against Russian Maria Sharapova 6: 2, 6: 3.

Kerber took the serve from their sixth-placed opponent Garcia in the first game from the serve. In the second round Garcia made more resistance, but lost in tiebreak.

Next week, Kerber will perform at her Wimbledon dress rehearsal in Eastbourne, UK.

Görges is in Birmingham in the semifinals

Also Julia Görges showed in the WTA tournament in Birmingham in good shape and moved into the semifinals. The German number two, semi-finalist in Wimbledon last year, prevailed in the quarter-final against Kasachin Julia Putinzewa 6: 3, 6: 2. Görges, 30, is now playing against Petra Martic (Croatia) for the final round. For the first time since her tournament victory in Auckland in January Görges is thus in the round of the last four.
