Race was canceled: Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert dies after a bad accident

The Formula 2 race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium was canceled after a serious accident. Shortly thereafter follows the terrible news: The 22-year-old driver Anthoine Hubert has died after the horror accident.

French junior racer Anthoine Hubert was fatally injured after a serious accident at the Formula 2 race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. The Motorsport World Federation FIA confirmed on Saturday evening shortly after the dramatic incident on Twitter the death of the 22-year-olds. Hubert succumbed to his injuries at 18.35 clock, the terrible crash occurred at 17.07 clock on the racetrack.

Immediately it was clear that this was no ordinary racing accident

Formula 2 rookie Hubert, who is also part of the junior program at Renault, struck with his car from the team BWT Arden after the notorious curve Eau Rouge due to another incident first in the boundary wall and was hurled back onto the track. The American Juan Manuel Correa could not dodge in time and drove in at full speed. While the 20-year-old Correa fell over and his vehicle remained upside down on the track, Hubert's car broke into several pieces.

It was immediately obvious that this was no ordinary racing accident. The TV cameras quickly showed no pictures of the scene of the event, a restart of the competition was out of the question. Rescue workers in several emergency vehicles hurried to supply the young pilots. Obviously Hubert could not be helped - he died at the Medical Center on the track.

On Instagram, the racing driver Mick Schumacher thought of the fatally injured Frenchman Anthoine Hubert. The fate is brutal, the loss is infinite Anthoine, we miss you already Peace in peace, wrote the 20-year-old Schumacher on Saturday night to a photo.

Condition of Correa is stable

The state of Ecuador-born Correa was stable, according to the FIA. He is being treated at a hospital in nearby Liège. At a later date, there should be more information about his injuries.

The remaining cars were then brought directly back into the pit lane. Other drivers were involved, but initially the reason for the chaos remained unclear.

The German racer Mick Schumacher was not involved in the accident, as this took place in the back of the field. The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher had started from sixth place in the first race after his maiden victory and finished ninth in the crash. He could not see the clash from his position.

Second race canceled

The scheduled for Sunday second Formula 2 race was canceled on Saturday evening. Also the procedure in the formula 1, which likewise takes place this weekend on the course in the Ardennes, was influenced already before the announcement of the death. For example, the World Champion team Mercedes canceled a media meeting at short notice, which was also attended by Renault team boss Cyril Abiteboul. Whether there will be any further changes to the race program, remained initially open.

"I can not believe it, peace and quiet," wrote Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. The Formula 1 team-mate of Sebastian Vettel had only recently won the pole position for the race of the premier class at the same place and now lost an old companion. Leclerc posted a joint photo from Youth Days on Instagram.

Similarly, McLaren pilot Lando Norris responded by writing: "Rest in peace Anthoine." Team McLaren added, "We send our sincere condolences to Antoine's family, loved ones, colleagues, team and the Formula 2 community."
