Australian Ashleigh Barty won her first individual title in a Grand Slam at the French Open in Paris. In the final, the previous number eight in the world rankings defeated the unseated Czech Marketa Vondrousova with 6: 1, 6: 3. Barty is the first Australian winner of a major since Samantha Stosur (US Open 2011). The last Australian winner in Roland Garros was Margaret Court in 1973. The Grand Slam final was a first for both players.
After all, Barty (23) won the US Open twice in the last year. Vondrousova (19) was drafted into the final in Paris without a set penalty, but in the biggest match of her career so far, she was nervous. Barty converted her first match ball after only 70 minutes. On Monday, she moves up to second in the world rankings.
