Both win their quarterfinals in straight sets. The Russian Aslan Karazew is the first Grand Slam debutant in the round of the last four.
The long-time tennis world number one Serena Williams has moved into the semi-finals of the Australian Open and thus still has the chance of her 24th title in a Grand Slam tournament. The 39-year-old American defeated the world number two Simona Halep from Romania on Tuesday 6: 3, 6: 3.
In the semifinals on Thursday, Serena Williams will meet Naomi Osaka from Japan. The Melbourne winner from 2019 prevailed 6: 2, 6: 2 against Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan. Serena Williams last won a Grand Slam tournament in Australia in 2017 and has been chasing the Australian Margaret Court’s all-time record ever since.
A debutant in the semi-finals
The world number 114. Aslan Karazew is completely surprising in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. With a 2: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1, 6: 2 against the ailing Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the 27-year-old Russian reached the semi-finals in Melbourne on Tuesday.
Karazew now meets the winner of the duel between Hamburg’s Alexander Zverev and the world number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia. Karazew had only secured a place in the main field through qualification and is the first player in the history of professional tennis to immediately reach the semi-finals on his Grand Slam debut.
