News : Bekele would not be fit to run the trials and would quit the Games
Fresh news from Ethiopia. One of the best long-distance runners in history and holder of the second best marathon record ever (2:01:41), the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, it seems that he would not be in a position to prepare the Olympic trials and could miss the appointment marked in red on the calendar for this 2021, the Tokyo Games (from Sapporo in the case of 42.195km). As reported by the Ethiopian team’s Olympic marathon coach (Haji Adilo), Kenenisa would not be in a position to run the ‘trials’ that will be held in Geneva (Switzerland) on May 2.
His dad’s death
The triple Olympic champion recently suffered the death of his father, which would have interrupted his preparation. “I don’t think he will run (the tests) because it is a short period of preparation for him, ”says Adilo. “He was thinking of running the Olympics, but the tests were announced a month ago, so I think he is not ready for this., from what I understand ”. Apparently, the format is very tough (especially considering the level of Ethiopia). It will be a full marathon and only the first three classified will have a ticket to the Games.
Kenenisa would take advantage of this circumstance to focus solely and exclusively on search the World Record in some of the appointments scheduled for next autumn (London, Berlin, Valencia?).
