Bundesliga: Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Schalke 04 play draw
Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Schalke 04 have separated on the first match day of the new Bundesliga season 0: 0. For the coaches of both clubs, Marco Rose at Gladbach and David Wagner at Schalke, it was the first game in the German luxury class.
Both teams began the game carefully and focused their game on control. This resulted in eleven shots in 45 minutes, but none of them would have hit the target. The only high-profile opportunity had Schalke access Benito Raman after a high pass from Guido Burgstaller behind the Gladbach defense, whereupon the Belgian ran free on the goal. However, the ball slipped over the instep during the shot, so he missed his goal meter-wide (27th minute).
Gladbach's Alassane Pléa scooped the best opportunity of the match just ten minutes after the restart, when Pléa sent the ball through in the penalty area but hit the post from a neat position (54 ').
Schalke's center-back Benjamin Stambouli scored once again in the 73rd minute when he was unable to clear the ball against Fabian Johnson in the penalty area and the ball jumped to Marcus Thuram. Goalkeeper Alexander Nübel was on hand. Shortly thereafter, the 22-year-old also prevented Schalker's deficit (77 ') when substitute Raffael's shot was fired. When Pléa came to a conclusion after a counterattack, Nübel held a third (81), so that the game ended scoreless.
