News : Bundesliga: Bremen separates from coach Kohfeldt – Sport
In the greatest need, Werder Bremen took the path back to the future: One game day before the end of the season, with the threat of direct relegation in mind, it was finally clear to the thoughtful Hanseatic team: Something had to happen – late, but still. And so they released coach Florian Kohfeldt after the 0: 2 (0: 0) at the rescued FC Augsburg and a night of talks – and installed a man from the past for him: Thomas Schaaf (60).
Reaching for the last straw had already indicated on Saturday afternoon, when manager Frank Baumann, similar to his colleague Stefan Reuter three weeks earlier, performed a verbal egg dance to avoid confessing to his trainer. “We have,” he said ZDF, “I experienced a brutally big disappointment, so that I do not want to make any clear statements. I want to coordinate with my colleagues and the supervisory board.”
The vote after returning to the training camp in Barsinghausen went quickly, on Sunday morning Werder announced: The veteran Schaaf, technical director at the club since July 2018, should save what can be saved on the last match day against Borussia Mönchengladbach and then in possible relegation games . Schaaf, said Baumann, should above all convey “absolute conviction and absolute will” to the team.
It could not be overlooked on Saturday in Augsburg that the Bremen team lacked these two qualities in particular. “Unfortunately after the game in Augsburg we were no longer convinced that we would be able to stay up with Florian Kohfeldt,” Baumann consequently emphasized. However, this knowledge could have matured earlier: In their nine games since the 25th matchday, Werder scored just one point.
In fact, Kohfeldt, who had only been an on-call coach since the 3-1 at Union Berlin three weeks ago, no longer had arguments for continued employment. Bremen has slipped to the relegation place and now urgently needs a win against Borussia Mönchengladbach in order to at least avoid direct relegation, the second after 1980, with certainty.
“That is of course a huge challenge,” says Schaaf. In Augsburg, the team was not up to this challenge. After 13 minutes Ruben Vargas from Augsburg (red, assault) flew off the field, but the advantage of the majority remained unused despite good chances – and he was completely gone when Christian Groß saw yellow-red (48th)
Kohfeldt therefore stated: “We built it ourselves.” And added: Especially in front of the gate, the “last conviction is not there”. Add: Will to win. However, Bremen did not want to be accused of a lack of attitude. “We threw everything in,” said Leonardo Bittencourt, who only hit the post after Rani Khedira (57th) made it 1-0 for Augsburg (72nd) Sky.
He also complained, however, of a lack of coolness: “If you don’t score a goal, you can’t keep the class.” But: They still hope. “We’re still alive,” said captain Niklas Moisander. However, only the Augsburgers can claim that without being contradicted – who acted in the person of manager Stefan Reuter three weeks ago.
After the home defeat against 1. FC Köln, he also did not commit to the coach – the result: Heiko Herrlich was kicked out, Markus Weinzierl came, and now the revived Swabians can plan for an eleventh year in the Bundesliga. Daniel Caligiuri (90th, penalty kick) ensured this. Reuter was allowed to pat himself on the shoulder for having pulled the emergency brake just in time. “Playing the Bundesliga for eleven years is a dream for us,” he says. What has the new trainer achieved above all? “He brought a lot of energy and faith into the team,” said Reuter. So everything that Werder Bremen was missing recently.
