BVB boss Watzke withdraws DFL candidacy - and leaves meetings angry

The runner-up will no longer be represented on the DFL executive committee after the departure of club boss Reinhard Rauball from office as a league president.

BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke is said to have left an advance meeting on Tuesday angry. He has withdrawn his candidacy for the Executive and Supervisory Boards. The reason: The front of the clubs from the lower middle class had made it clear, not Watzke but Bavaria CFO Jan-Christian Dreeßen to vote in the body. As a majority for Dreeßen emerged, Watzke reportedly backtracked.

Smaller clubs can make interests clearer

In addition to Dreeßen Alexander Wehrle from 1. FC Cologne to occupy the second reserved for the first division space in the nine-member DFL presidium. Oliver Leki from the Freiburg-based club and Oke Göttlich from FC St. Pauli are two other small-club representatives, and in the future they could articulate their interests more clearly on issues such as the distribution of TV money.
