Cheptegei goes for the Bekele World Record in Monaco
It seems that the Diamond League begins to get a little bit of shape after the Initial avalanche of cancellations due to the COVID-19 crisis. This Monday four TOP participations were confirmed for the Monaco Meeting: Pascal Martinot (110 hurdles), Yulimar Rojas (triple jump), Sifan Hassan (5,000) and Joshua Cheptegei (5,000). The poster is not bad at all to start with the promo of this meeting that will take place on August 14 at the Louis II stadium.
They just ratified their 5k record
We are going to stop at the Ugandan long distance runner, to whom the World Athletics has just ratified the 5k World Record en route achieved precisely in Monaco on February 16 (12:51). Joshua managed for the first time in history to drop below 13 ′ and improved, eye for data, in 27 seconds the previous record of Rhonex Kipruto achieved just a few weeks earlier in the Valencia Ibercaja 10k (13:18). The 23-year-old athletes will not go on a trip to the Principality, but has in mind, as announced by the organization itself, to attack the world record of Kenenisa Bekele in these 5,000 meters on track that is 12:37:35. The Ugandan's personal mark is 12:57:41 achieved in Zurich last summer.
Note that Joshua has a PB in the 10,000 meters of 26:48:36, which earned him the title of world champion in Doha in 2019. It will certainly be a sight to see him back in action and looking to make history again in Monaco.
