Cristiano Ronaldo: Statement by Leslie Stovall - lawyer of Kathryn Mayorga
Even after the decision of the prosecutor in Las Vegas to refrain from a criminal case against Cristiano Ronaldo because of the allegation of rape, the case for the football star is not settled. That announced Leslie Mark Stovall, lawyer of the alleged victim Kathryn Mayorga, against the SPIEGEL.
Furthermore, a civil suit, the Mayorga had filed before the United States District Court in Nevada. This is an out of court settlement that she had concluded with Ronaldo in 2010. This remains unaffected by the district prosecutor's decision, Stovall said.
The lawyer said to SPIEGEL: "The legal principles and the foundations of the evidence differ in a criminal and civil process." They are "separate lawsuits" that can "have the same facts but not depend on each other."
Clark County's district attorney's office said the allegations against Ronaldo could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt. The criminal proceedings are therefore not opened. In the civil process another principle applies: "preponderance of evidence" - Ronaldo's guilt must be more probable than his innocence.
The background: Mayorga and Ronaldo had met in June 2009 at a party in a nightclub in Las Vegas. In his hotel room there was intercourse. That is so far undisputed by both. Mayorga says Ronaldo raped her - the footballer says it was consensual sex. In 2018 she had made the allegations in the SPIEGEL public.
