News : Dikes breaks the World Record of 50 kilometers: At 4: 44 / km with 72 years!
We have already talked about him on occasion. It is the third World Record that he has broken. He keeps getting older, but he doesn’t lose his passion for running and racing. And that makes it unique. At 72, Gene Dykes has made history again. On this occasion, the North American has achieved the world record of 50 kilometers on the road in the category +70. A tremendous milestone that we are going to reel in figures to get an idea of the magnitude of what this very veteran American athlete has achieved in the 50km Road National Championships held in East Islip, New York.
Dykes crossed the finish line in a time of 3:56:43, 19 minutes faster than the previous holder of the record, the German Wilhelm Hofmann, who in 1997 stopped the clock at 4:15:55. As we mentioned, it is the third World Record that Gene breaks after the 100 +70 miles and the 24 hours. To give even more emphasis to the feat, it should be noted that Dykes came from running just a week before a ‘trail’ of 50 kilometers and only a month ago he had completed the mythical ‘Cocodona 250’ in Arizona, where he traveled 152 miles ( 245 kilometers.
The American completed the 50km at a stratospheric pace of 4:44 / km. Dykes told ‘Canadian Running’ after the test that the conditions were good (about 20 degrees), sunny and with little wind.
