News : FC Bayern: Robert Lewandowski is out for four weeks – sport
At first glance, the scene didn’t look spectacular. Poland had a corner kick, the ball sailed into the penalty area, Andorra could not clear, there was a turmoil. Robert Lewandowski was looking for the way to the ball, Albert Alavedra Jimenez fell into him. It was only when the striker hobbled and then stopped that his surroundings became aware. Shortly thereafter, national coach Paulo Sousa took him off the field. As a precaution, everyone thought at first, as Poland already led 2-0 – with two goals from Lewandowski.
Lewandowski then sat on the bench with an ice pack. That was almost that curious moment when Uli Hoeneß picked up the phone in the RTL studio, where he has recently been working as a commentator, to inquire personally. The first prognoses, the honorary president of FC Bayern informed the audience, were “not that bad”. At the sight of the ice pack pictures, however, his heart “stopped short”. The Polish federation also spoke of a “five to ten day” break in its first diagnosis.
Since Tuesday afternoon, however, the definitive diagnosis has been made by the record champions’ medical department: ligament stretching in the knee, FC Bayern expects a failure of four weeks. The striker missed the top Bundesliga game at RB Leipzig on Holy Saturday – and also both Champions League quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain.
Depending on the course of his recovery, he could be missing up to five Bundesliga games. In addition – assuming progress against Paris – in a possible Champions League semi-final against Borussia Dortmund or Manchester City according to the draw. It will be Lewandowski’s longest injury break. So far, the now 32-year-old has been missing a maximum of three games in a row in all his professional years in Dortmund (until 2014) and at FC Bayern. Once he suffered a shoulder injury from a Champions League duel with Real Madrid – but otherwise he was constancy in person.
There was initially no reaction from the club besides the sober announcement. But for FC Bayern this is now, there is no other way of saying it, the biggest accident to be expected in this phase of the season. In the weeks in which preliminary decisions and decisions are made, the club lacks the current world footballer, the central striker, who scored 35 goals in 26 Bundesliga games. He is only five short of Gerd Müller’s record. Depending on when he returns, he only has three or four games left.
The only other real center forward in Hansi Flick’s squad is Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, 32, who came from Paris in the summer and has played in 16 league games (one goal) and five Champions League duels (two goals) for Bayern so far came. Alternatively, the coach could use Thomas Müller as a striker or put Serge Gnabry at the center of the offensive game. Whichever solution Flick chooses, it will be a massive change. FC Bayern have never had to do without their fixed point for so long – see above. He therefore never had to prove over a long period of time that he could score goals in a row even without the series goalscorer. A dependency has developed from which the people of Munich now have to break free.
This season Lewandowski was only spared in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win on matchday six against 1. FC Köln, in the cup the Munich team did without him in the first round win against Düren (3-0). In the Champions League, he was missing in the two preliminary round games against Atlético Madrid and Lokomotiv Moscow, which had become meaningless. Otherwise? He played and played. And hit and hit.
