News : Fifa explains the behavior of the sheikh at the award ceremony: the “schedule” was to blame
The award ceremony of the Club World Cup in Qatar is causing a stir. Because while Sheikh Al Thani expects players and coaches one after the other with raised fists, he seems to be ignoring two female referees. Now Fifa has commented on the case.
The world association Fifa justified the behavior of Qatar’s top official Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani at the award ceremony after the final of the Club World Cup with the schedule. Following FC Bayern’s title win, the President of the National Olympic Committee of the World Cup host country in 2022 did not congratulate two referees and individual players with the fist that replaced the handshake on Thursday evening due to the corona.
“The two referees as well as some players and team officials passed by and did not go straight to all of the relevant people at the awards ceremony,” said Fifa on Friday evening after the “Bild” newspaper reported on it.
No greeting: Sheik seems to ignore referees
The video of the medal award shows how the Brazilians Edina Alves Batista and Neuza Back, who, together with the Argentine Mariana de Almeida, were the first women to be appointed to the Club World Cup, walk past the Sheikh. Alves Batista, who was appointed fourth official, is visibly absorbed in her medal.
The following video referee Julio Bascunan does not receive a fist greeting from the sheikh either. The pros of the defeated Mexican club Tigres UANL as well as those of the German record champions then took to the stage in quick succession, where FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the medals and Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also congratulated Bayern.
The World Cup organizing committee of the strictly conservative country, in which it is not uncommon for men not to touch women outside their own family, did not comment on the pictures on Friday when asked.
