Football World Cup: DFB women win highly against South Africa - Sport

  • The German footballers win at the end of the preliminary round loosely 4-0 against South Africa.
  • The goals are Leupolz, Däbritz, Popp and Magull.
  • In the second round Germany will play on Saturday (17.30 clock) in Grenoble. The opponent is not determined yet.

Freed from pressure, the German women's national football team stormed into the World Cup final finals as group first. The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg won on Monday to the preliminary round in Montpellier sovereign with 4-0 (3: 0) against South Africa and showed after the two 1-0 victories against China and Spain without the injured playmaker Dzsenifer Marozsan the hoped for playful increase against those on the offensive.

The scorers also managed to score better: Melanie Leupolz (14th minute), Sara Däbritz (29th), Alexandra Popp (40th) and Lina Magull (58th) met in front of 15 502 spectators at the Stade de la Mosson - many of them German followers - to highly deserved success in the first international match with the World Cup newcomer. Positive: The DFB selection ended the group stage without conceding.

With the group victory, the two-time world champion has reached his first stage goal in France and will meet in the round of 16 next Saturday (17.30 clock) in Grenoble on one of the four best group stages. How the first opponent in the knockout round will be called, is not yet clear. Spain and China fought for second place in Group B at the same time. The pointless Banyana Banyana will have to travel home.

Shortly before the break Popp hits the head

Voss-Tecklenburg had changed their team to three positions compared to the Spain game. For Kathrin Hendrich, Lena Goeßling and Lena Oberdorf, who were charged with a yellow card, Leupolz, Magull and 18-year-old Freiburg native Klara Bühl were placed in the starting lineup. For the first time the DFB team competed in this World Cup in 4-4-2 system, with Bühl and captain Popp as a double top. The coach had demanded after two lackluster victories to the preliminary round a playful increase. And Germany started against the world ranking 49. committed and purposeful, never raised any doubts about the will to win.

The first attacks were missing in glorious football weather and 27 degrees still in precision, before a standard situation led to the deserved German leadership. In a corner kicked by Verena Schweers Leupolz was completely free on the line of the five-meter space and had no trouble to place their header in the lower left corner. Only two minutes later, it should have been 2-0: When South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini was able to defend a Däbritz shot only with difficulty, Popp shot unceasingly from close range over the empty goal.

Inexplicably, there was then a small break in the offensive game of the DFB team. It took almost half an hour for the playful Däbritz to build the lead. Again keeper Dlamini could not hold on a cross, this time from Schweers. And the Bald-Paris Däbritz was with her second tournament goal on the spot. Even before the break, Popp made up for her faux pas and increased in the usual manner with a powerful header after a low pass from Giulia Gwinn to 3: 0.

After the change, the picture did not change. Germany dominated and at the latest with the 4: 0 of the lively Bayern midfielder Magull, who used the confusion in the African defense after a free kick by Carolin Simon, the game was finally decided. After just over an hour Linda Dallmann came to her World Cup debut. Only in the final phase of the South African women came to opportunities, for the second tournament goal but it was no longer enough.
