News : Formula 1 in Barcelona – Hamilton wins Spanish Grand Prix – Sport
The world champion wins ahead of Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. He had previously led for 60 laps – but then lost the top spot in a tire poker.
Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix. After his biggest competitor of the season Max Verstappen had led over 60 laps in the Red Bull, the reigning world champion overtook him only six laps before the end.
The decisive factor for the maneuver were the new and significantly faster tires that Hamilton had picked up in the pits just a few laps earlier. The Red Bull team, on the other hand, did without a second pit stop and let Verstappen drive with the softer tires – a mistake, as it turned out later. The Mercedes team, on the other hand, celebrated in the pits for the successful tactical performance and exuberantly praised its driver Hamilton for the implementation.
For the Mercedes driver, who started from pole, the race had not got off to a good start. Max Verstappen got off to a much better start and immediately pulled away, Hamilton was only able to line up behind his competitor. He didn’t get really close to the Dutchman during the whole race, his performance was too strong, especially at the beginning of the race. It was not until the tire poker game towards the end of the race that Hamilton helped push past Verstappen.
Third in Barcelona was Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, fourth in Monegasse Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari. Hamilton himself celebrates his third win in the fourth race of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix; So far, Verstappen has won one race in the World Cup duel. In the classification, Hamilton’s lead grows to 14 points.
