News : Formula 1 in Imola: Verstappen wins ahead of Hamilton – Sport
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has won the turbulent Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. The Dutchman triumphed in Imola ahead of Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes and Lando Norris in a McLaren (both England), it was Verstappen’s eleventh Grand Prix victory. However, thanks to the extra point for the fastest race lap, Hamilton retains the championship lead with one point ahead of Verstappen.
“It was a big challenge, especially at the beginning in the wet,” said Verstappen: “The season is still long, there is still a lot to come.” Hamilton, who had meanwhile dropped to ninth after a slip, said: “It wasn’t my best day. I thank the team for helping me to get it back.”
The second race of the season was disappointing from Sebastian Vettel’s point of view. The four-time champion had to start from the pit lane after technical problems on his Aston Martin, shortly before the end he had to park his car with a gearbox failure, but was in 15th place. Newcomer Mick Schumacher made a take-off, but was able to leave his Russian team-mate Nikita Masepin behind with 16th place in the defeated Haas.
The race, which started in the wet, was characterized by slips and a 30-minute break after a crash between Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas and George Russell in the Williams.
