News : Giro d’Italia 2021 on TV and live stream: Follow the 7th stage live today

From May 8th to May 30th it goes with the Giro d’Italia 2021, the first three-week tour of the CyclingCalendar going. Eight uphill journeys and two time trials await the drivers along the entire route. In this overview we explain which routes you have to cover on the Tour of Italy and how cycling fans can be there live on TV and live stream.

Giro d’Italia 2021: This is what cyclists can expect on the routes

The racing bike professionals aim high. The route at the Giro d’Italia is nothing for all racing drivers. Rather, several mountains and meters in altitude have to be conquered. The drive over the Dolomites should be particularly interesting. It is not without reason that the 16th stage is the queen stage. In one day it goes over the Passo Fedaia, the Passo Pordoi, the Passo Giau and over 212 kilometers to the final destination in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The other routes are tough too. We have summarized where to go in the following overview.

Giro d’Italia 2021 results current

+++ May 12 Ewan wins the second mass sprint of the Giro – Landa fell badly +++

Caleb Ewan won the second mass sprint of the 104th Giro d’Italia. The Australian professional cyclist prevailed on Wednesday on the 5th stage in the seaside resort of Cattolica ahead of the Italians Giacomo Nizzolo and Eli Viviani. On the east coast of Italy, Bora professional Peter Sagan sprinted to fourth place. The tour is already over for fellow favorite Mikel Landa. The Spaniard crashed badly 4.5 kilometers from the finish.

As expected, there was no change at the top of the overall ranking. Alessandro De Marchi from Italy defended his pink jersey and is 42 seconds ahead of Belgian Louis Vervaeke. The American Joe Dombrowski was involved in the Landa crash and lost second place overall. In 26th place, the German podium candidate Emanuel Buchmann is 2:29 minutes behind De Marchi. On Thursday, the first real mountain finish should cause changes in the classification. At the end of the 160-kilometer stage, the peloton has to master the 15.5-kilometer final ascent to San Giacomo, 1090 meters above sea level. The last third of the mountain in particular has gradients of up to ten percent.

+++ 05/11/2021: Dombrowski wins – Buchmann loses seconds +++

The American Joe Dombrowski defied adverse weather conditions and won the fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia. After 187 kilometers from Piacenza to Sestola, Dombrowski prevailed on Tuesday ahead of Alessandro de Marchi from Italy and compatriot Filippo Fiorelli. On the demanding stage with an altitude difference of more than 3000 meters, the riders attacked for the first time with a chance of overall victory in the final part.

The German hopeful Emanuel Buchmann, who disappointed in the first individual time trial on Saturday, lost 34 more seconds to some of the top riders around the former Tour winner Egan Bernal. The overall leader’s pink jersey was taken over by de Marchi from Italy’s time trial specialist Filippo Ganna, who was clearly left behind on Tuesday. The next chance for the sprinters awaits on Wednesday. On the 177 kilometers from Modena to Cattolica, the profile hardly presents any major challenges. The first sprint finish was won by the Belgian Tim Merlier on Sunday.

+++ May 10th, 2021: runaway van der Hoorn wins third stage +++

Runaway Taco van der Hoorn was rewarded for a courageous attack at the 104th Giro d’Italia and surprisingly won the third stage. After 190 kilometers from Biella to Canale, the 27-year-old Dutchman saved a lead of four seconds from the approaching field, which van der Hoorn could not stop. Second place went to Davide Cimolai from Italy, ahead of the Slovak Peter Sagan from the German team Bora-hansgrohe. Van der Hoorn was part of a breakaway group and only set himself apart from his remaining comrades over the last few kilometers.

The pink jersey of the overall first is still worn by the Italian world champion Filippo Ganna, who won the opening time trial in Turin on Saturday. The German podium hopeful Emanuel Buchmann had lost almost a minute to Ganna and also a few seconds to the rivals in the overall standings in the fight against the clock. A slightly more demanding stage is on the program on Tuesday. On the 183 kilometers from Piacenza to Sestola there is a little more than 3000 meters of altitude to overcome. Large time gaps for the drivers in the overall ranking are not yet to be expected.

+++ May 9th, 2021: Merlier wins second Giro stage – Ganna stays in pink +++

The Belgian Tim Merlier won the second stage of the 104th Giro d’Italia. The 28-year-old professional cyclist won the mass sprint on Sunday after 179 kilometers from Stupinigi to Novara in front of the two Italians Giacomo Nizzolo and Elia Viviani.

On Monday, the sprinters could come back to the train. One mountain of the third and two climbs of the fourth category should be feasible for the fast men on the third section over 190 kilometers from Biella to Canale.

+++ May 8th, 2021: Buchmann starts 104th place in the Giro d’Italia – Ganna wins +++

The German hopeful Emanuel Buchmann started the Giro d’Italia only with a 104th place. The 28-year-old professional cyclist was 55 seconds slower than the Italian winner of the day and world champion Filippo Ganna in the opening time trial over 8.6 kilometers in Turin on Saturday. Buchmann, who is not one of the best time trialists, also lost important seconds compared to the class riders. Second and third place went to the Italian Edoardo Affini (0:10 minutes back) and the Norwegian Tobias Foss (0:13).

Buchmann, who was fourth overall in the Tour de France in 2019, wants to be the first German to get on the podium at the Tour of Italy. The profile suits the climbing specialist. More than 47,000 vertical meters have to be covered on the 3479.9 kilometer route from Turin to Milan.

On Sunday, the sprinters could first come into play. The second section over 179 kilometers from Stupinigi to Novara leads over flat terrain.

Teams and German drivers at the Giro d’Italia

Cyclist applies in advance Egan Bernal as a favorite for overall victory. But only if the Colombian is fit again after his injury. German drivers should also hope for good places. The former fourth in the Tour de France Emanuel Buchmann feels “ready” for the Giro d’Italia, which starts on Saturday, and goes into the three-week tour with great expectations. “The goal is the podium. The competition is strong and therefore it will be difficult to achieve this goal, but I think it is possible,” said the professional cyclist of the German press agency.

Buchmann took fourth place on the tour in 2019. Last year he went to the Tour of France after a serious fall and did not get above 38th overall. He has not yet given up his goal of being on the podium at the Tour. But this year it doesn’t make much sense. “When I saw the track for the first time, I was very disappointed. The Tour is my favorite race, it is and will be that way. But after the decision to go for the Giro, my whole focus was only on this goal,” said Buchmann .

Due to the difficult profile, the Giro suits the 28-year-old. In the summer, the driver from the Bora-hansgrohe team wants to go to the Olympic Games. “The route in Tokyo suits me, and the Olympics are definitely a goal. But first comes the Giro,” said Buchmann. “Only then do I start thinking about what is still on the program for 2021.”
