Hockey European Championship: Germany loses game for third place

Germany's hockey men have lost the small final at the European Championships in Antwerp and thus missed a medal. The team of national coach Stefan Kermas lost against defending champions Netherlands 0: 4 (0: 1). The winners for the winner were Björn Kellermann (19th), Mirco Pruijser (43.), Jeroen Hertzberger (58.) with seven meters and Mink van der Weerden (60.).

"The fact is that we were superior in all statistics, as in the group match, but lose 0: 4! A 0: 4 has rarely felt so different," said coach Kermas, whose team left some good opportunities unused. Against the Netherlands, the team had lost to captain Mats Grambusch already in the group stage 2: 3.

In the final quarter, however, the team were lucky that first Martin Häner deflected a shot with the bat on the bar and later the Dutchman Jip Janssen after a penalty corner hit only the post.

The German men's hockey team had won their last medal at the Olympic Games in Rio, then it was enough to bronze. National coach Kermas had this time issued a podium finish as a goal. The last European title was the same as for the German women in 2013 in the Belgian boom. As European champion Germany would have qualified directly for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The host takes the title

European champion was Belgium for the first time. The hosts prevailed in a one-sided final against Spain 5: 0 (4: 0). In 2013 and 2017, Belgium, who is also the reigning world champion, won silver in the European Championship finals.

At the end of October, there will be an Olympic qualifier, with seven nations each going to qualify for the Summer Games. Who participates in this last selection round, is not yet known; also the venue is not fixed yet.
