News : Ice hockey World Cup in Belarus: How the world association courted Alexander Lukashenko
Alexander Lukashenko no longer receives many visitors from abroad. He has been largely isolated since he had himself proclaimed President of Belarus after fraudulent elections in August, beating and persecuting protesters by the tens of thousands. Anyone who travels to Minsk like René Fasel must know about the symbolism of such a gathering.
The Swiss Fasel, head of the World Ice Hockey Federation, does not seem to mind – more than that, he not only shook hands with Lukashenko on Monday, but also gave the ruler a warm hug, who greeted him as “dear” René. Afterwards, the two shook hands for a long time, as shown by pictures of the regime-related Telegram channel “Pool des Erste”.
Lukashenko later informed the sports official that there was supposedly nothing in the way of hosting the ice hockey World Cup, there were no threats in Belarus, neither from the corona virus nor from political reasons. “Nobody here storms government buildings and the Capitol,” said Lukashenko, referring to the violent storm of the US Congress.
