News : Irene Sánchez-Escribano says goodbye to the Tokyo Games due to injury
The Toledo athlete Irene Sánchez-Escribano will not attend the Tokyo Olympics after suffering a fracture of the second metatarsal in her left foot while training
After her participation in the Spanish Championship in Getafe, where she won her sixth national title, and last week in the Diamond League in Monaco where a fall prevented the adidas athlete from showing her good form with a view to Tokyo, Irene Sánchez -Escribano has confirmed in its networks the worst news a few days before the start of the Olympic event on July 23
Two years after achieving her personal best in Birmingham (9: 27.53) and winning the passport for the Games in the 3,000 obstacles, the athlete explained in her networks how the injury occurred: “I don’t really believe what I’m writing yet. Yesterday, training, I felt a sudden click on my foot, without warning. I have never suffered from that area, it is not an injury that has given me time to chronify or assume as my own. I was just running smooth, no hurdles, and my foot said enough. I felt a ‘clack’. Afterwards I have not been able to plant it again, since yesterday I have been carrying crutches. And today I had an X-ray showing a diaphyseal fracture of the second metatarsal of the left foot. That is what I have.
So, goodbye Tokyo2020 and goodbye Olympics. I can only say that it is a great bitch, and sorry for the word, to get here and have to say goodbye to the Olympic dream a week away from traveling to Japan.
But sport is like that. I’ve had a great time preparing to be in the way I am, which is the best of my life. And with that I stay.
To heal and continue, as you can imagine I have cried enough. And I still have tears.
Thanks for your support always ».
