Jakobsen, in induced coma after brutal fall with Groenewegen
The first stage of the Tour of Poland was played this Wednesday normally between Chorzów and Katowice, over 195 kilometers, until the last meters, where in the middle of the sprint for the victory there was a massive hard fall, for which Fabio Jakobsen is seriously ill and hospitalized in an induced coma.
The organization could not give results in the immediate arrival as usual due to the accident at the finish line and the consequences are becoming known. Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) and Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) bid for the victory on the right side, but Groenewegen closed even more to the right to Jakobsen, who collided with the fences and even with a person from the race in a very violent way.
According to the Polish public channel TVP Sport, Jakobsen had to be treated urgently by "several doctors" and was transferred to a hospital "intubated and in an induced coma". At maximum speed, the arrival left harsh images of several cyclists involved, jumping off the race circuit and tripping over the billboards and advertising that entered the street.
When he was fired, Jakobsen hit right with the goal arc and with that person from the organization standing at the checkered flag. The first sports reaction has been the disqualification of Groenewegen with harsh criticism from the peloton as well, while fingers crossed for the next few hours.
The five-day World Tour event features big names like Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-QuickStep), current road sensation after his exhibition in Burgos; Wout Poels (Bahrain McLaren), Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), Jakob Fuglsang himself (Astana) and the current Giro champion Richard Carapaz (Team Ineos).
One of the ugliest falls that I remember Jakobsen in the Tour of Poland. The Groenewegen maneuver is very ugly. It's scary 🙏🙏🙏#TourOfPoland
