News : Olympia 2021 – Bach’s commitment to Tokyo – sport
Despite the corona emergency in Japan and the negative survey results of the citizens, IOC boss Thomas Bach rules out a cancellation of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. “At the moment we have absolutely no reason to believe that the Tokyo Olympics will not open at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium on July 23,” said the president of the International Olympic Committee of the Japanese news agency Kyodo. The Canadian Richard Pound, the longest-serving IOC member, made it clear that the audience was not a requirement for the games to be held. “It’s nice to have an audience. But it’s not a must,” said Pound, 78, of the Kyodo agency. Pound added that given the pandemic, no one could guarantee that the games would take place. “But I think there is a very, very good chance that they can and that they will”. According to Pound, six or seven scenarios are currently being considered regarding the issue of viewers. One possibility would be that only Japanese citizens are allowed to attend the competitions.
