News : Premier League: Manchester City become English champions early
Manchester City are English football champions for the seventh time. The team of start coach Pep Guardiola, who lost 2-1 to Chelsea on Saturday, benefited from the 1-2 (1-1) defeat of second Manchester United against Leicester City on Tuesday evening. With ten points ahead of local rivals United, leaders City cannot be overtaken three game days before the end of the season.
The guests from Leicester won at Old Trafford with goals from Luke Thomas (10th minute) and former Freiburg’s Çaglar Söyüncü (66th) and made Man City the champion. Mason Greenwood (15th) scored the equalizer for Man United.
After a moderate start in the league, the Citizens did not take the lead in the table for the first time until matchday 20 and have not been displaced from first place since then. Man City has won 25 out of 35 games this season, drawn five times and lost five games.
For the Guardiola-Elf it is the third championship in four years. The team had won the league cup for the fourth time in a row this season. On top of that, City had qualified for the first time in club history for the final of the Champions League last Tuesday with a 2-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain, where the club will meet Thomas Tuchel’s FC Chelsea on May 29.
