News : Premier League: Tottenham Hotspur loses Derby at Arsenal FC despite sensational goal
It was the highlight of the North London February and already one of the highlights of the Premier League season: Tottenham’s Lucas Moura put up in the opposing penalty area with a short pass for Erik Lamela. Actually, Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka blocked the way to the goal. Lamela, however, swung his left foot around the right leg, took the ball so directly and hit Party’s legs into the far corner.
A sensational goal, as demonstrated by the reaction of Lamela’s team-mate Sergio Reguilon, who opened his mouth wide and clapped his hands on his forehead. The movement, called »Rabona«, is regularly attempted with flanking balls by players who are technically aware of themselves. Controlled shots on goal, especially successful ones, are the absolute exception.
As nice as the interim leading goal was (33rd minute), it was also surprising. Arsenal won 2: 1 (1: 1), were the better team for long periods of the game and created a large number of chances in the early stages. Martin Ødegaard (44th) and Alexandre Lacazette (64th, penalty) turned the game around.
Aubameyang is not playing for disciplinary reasons
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta voluntarily renounced his star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The former Dortmund player was kicked out of the starting line-up for disciplinary reasons, as “The Athletic” reported that Aubameyang was late for the match briefing.
Arsenal repeatedly created opportunities in the first half. The focus was on the left wing, Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty couldn’t deal with the fast-paced Emile Smith Rowe and Kieran Thierney.
Smith Rowe, who hit the crossbar (16th), and right-back Cédric Soares, who failed at the right post (37th), gave the best chances. After a cross, again from the left, Ødegaard scored with the help of the deflecting Toby Alderweireld to equalize (44th).
Tottenham, on the other hand, was low and keen to counterattack. Unfortunately for coach José Mourinho, Son Heung-min, one of the players who is essential for the Spurs to switch quickly, was injured early on. After a sprint, he grabbed his thigh and was substituted in the 16th minute.
Only after Arsenal’s opening goal by Lacazette (64th) – Davinson Sánchez had previously fouled the penalty taker in the penalty area – did Tottenham get better into the game. Although dream scorer Lamela saw yellow-red, the Spurs were dangerous. Harry Kane hit the goal from the offside position (83.), after a free kick he hit the post (90.). But it was no longer enough to compensate.
