News : Relegation – Cologne beats Kiel and stays in the Bundesliga – sport
Thanks to a furious first half in the relegation second leg, 1. FC Köln prevented relegation to the second division. Kiel missed the ascent again.
1. FC Köln will remain part of the Bundesliga. The Rhinelander prevailed on Saturday in the relegation second leg against second division third Holstein Kiel with 5: 1 (4: 1). Thanks to the success, the team of coach Friedhelm Funkel made up for the 0-1 defeat on Wednesday and prevented the seventh Bundesliga relegation in the club’s history.
In front of a little more than 2,300 spectators, Jonas Hector (3rd) and Sebastian Andersson (6th / 13th) met twice in an exciting initial phase. In the meantime, Jae-Sung Lee (4th) had equalized for Kiel. Rafael Czichos (39th) made the decision in favor of the Bundesliga club early on. Ellyes Skhiri (84th) put the finishing touches.
1. FC Köln had only saved themselves on the relegation place in the Bundesliga final last Saturday by beating Schalke 04. The 67-year-old coach Funkel is returning to his retirement after the successful rescue. His successor has already been determined in ex-Paderborn’s Steffen Baumgart.
Holstein Kiel, however, missed the happy end of a season with many successes such as winning the DFB Cup against Bayern Munich, but also with many adversities. The team of coach Ole Werner had lost second place and thus direct promotion with two defeats on the last two match days of the 2nd Bundesliga. After two two-week corona quarantines, they had to complete a mammoth program in the final phase. The game on Saturday was the eleventh game in just over a month.
Three years ago, the Kielers were only stopped in relegation on their way to the Bundesliga. At that time they had to admit defeat to VfL Wolfsburg.
