News : Schalke parted ways with Riether, Gross and Schneider – Sport

Bundesliga soccer team Schalke 04 was on Sunday by sports director Jochen Schneider (50), coach Christian Gross (66), assistant coach Rainer Widmayer (53), licensed player coordinator Sascha Riether (37) and athletics coach Werner Leuthard (59) Cut. This was officially announced by the Royal Blues. On Saturday Schalke lost 5-1 at VfB Stuttgart. The training session scheduled for Monday will be led by the athletic trainers, the search for a new coach is ongoing.

Peter Knäbel (54), head of the “Knappenschmiede”, inherits Schneider initially. In addition, ex-national player Gerald Asamoah (42) will take over the coordination of the licensed players department as Riether’s successor. With a view to the planning for the new season, according to the club, Knäbel, the director of young talent and development, will be supported, as before, by U19 head coach Norbert Elgert and Mike Büskens. The bottom of the table staggered towards the fourth descent in the club’s history.

Gross was introduced shortly after Christmas as the fourth Schalke coach this season. Already after the second game day, the royal blues had parted ways with David Wagner. Manuel Baum couldn’t stop the Schalke crash either and was replaced by Huub Stevens’ interim solution in December before Gross took over.

Before the appearance at VfB, there had been media reports about a player revolt against Gross, which the club denied. On Friday, S04 will face FSV Mainz 05 in a relegation duel with sports director Christian Heidel, who was also active for Schalke. On Sunday morning, Sky showed pictures of Gross, who left the hotel near the Schalke Arena with his bags packed.

“We don’t need to talk about the trimmings: The sporting situation is clear, so we have to think beyond the season for every personnel decision that has to be made. At the same time, the team is now obliged to contest the last third of the current season as successfully as possible . The players, the club and the fans owe it, “said Jens Buchta, chairman of the S04 supervisory board, quoted on the club’s website.
