Serena Williams announces start at US Open dress rehearsal
The WTA tennis tournament in Cincinnati is considered the dress rehearsal for the last major of the year, the US Open. Here, the stars of the tennis scene check their form before the Grand Slam tournament in New York, which begins on August 26th.
Even Serena Williams had hoped to prepare in Cincinnati, but nothing will come of it. The American has canceled her participation in the tournament. The reason: She is still struggling with a back injury.
"I've tried everything to be ready to play, but unfortunately my back still is not okay," Williams said. The 37-year-old had twice won the € 2.94 million tournament.
Hunting for the 24th Grand Slam title
Williams has been struggling with complaints since last weekend. Also on Sunday she had to give up in the final of the tournament of Toronto against Bianca Andreescu after only four games.
Williams, who celebrated her final tournament win at the Australian Open in 2017, has been waiting for the next triumph since returning to a baby break.
She is on the hunt for a record: In her career she has already won 23 Grand Slam tournaments. With another success - such as the US Open - she would match the record holder Margaret Court.
