SG Flensburg-Handewitt wins handball supercup against THW Kiel

SG Flensburg-Handewitt started the new season by winning the Handball Supercup. The reigning German champions won in a seven-meter throw with 4: 3 against cup winner THW Kiel. After regular playing time, it had stood in the Düsseldorf Arena 28:28 (14:13). At the end, it was Kiel's top star Domagoj Duvnjak who failed with the last seven-meter penalty to SG keeper Benjamin Buric.

The prestigious success in the 100th Nordderby Flensburg gives self-confidence for the beginning of the weekend season in the Handball Bundesliga. Kiel on the other hand missed the first title under new coach Filip Jicha, who had replaced after last season Alfred Gislason. The Icelander had been coach of Kiel for eleven years and had won a total of 19 titles with the THW, including twice the Champions League. In the past season, Jicha already worked as Gislasons assistant coach, together they won the DHB Cup and the EHF Cup. The German Championship has not brought Kiel since 2015.

"If you want to win, you have to make better use of the odds," said Jicha, who was himself eight years in Kiel, now after the lost final: "The little things have decided the game, we must not let our heads down." Flensburg goalkeeper Buric did not want to overstate the title. "We were a bit luckier than Kiel and today we showed good handball, but we are not favorites for the championship," he said.
