News : Soccer Bundesliga: Schalke 04 loses against 1. FC Cologne
Schalke 04 suffered the next setback in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. In the home game against 1. FC Köln, the bottom group lost 1: 2 (0: 1). The team finished the first half of the season with just seven points. Cologne is currently in 15th place in the table with 15 points.
The leading goal in Cologne in the Schalker Arena was achieved by Rafael Czichos (31st minute), Matthew Hoppe equalized in the second half (57th). Shortly afterwards Schalke had to complain about the failure of Sead Kolašinac, who had apparently injured his thigh in an attack in the 64th minute. A little later, the loan player from Arsenal FC had to be replaced. A diagnosis of the severity of the injury was initially pending. Jan Thielmann made the decision in stoppage time.
The game began without the hopefuls: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was still missing in the Schalke squad. The return action of the Dutchman was reported as perfect on Tuesday, but the 37-year-old was unable to participate due to calf problems. The former Schalke was in the stadium, already active for the club from 2010 to 2017, but still. Huntelaar is said to have spoken to the Schalke team in the cabin.
His words seemed to have a little effect right away: Schalke initially had better chances and more from the game. But the game was also marked by many mistakes and, as is so often the case in such games, set pieces are decisive. Ralf Fährmann misjudged himself at a corner and the Schalke goalkeeper defended the cross insufficiently, Dominick Drexler shot the ball back into the six-yard box and Czichos headed into the goal from close range (31).
Cologne was then more dangerous, hit the right post in the 54th minute on a counterattack – and only had to accept the equalizer a little later after a disastrous defensive performance. Hoppe used the chaos in Cologne’s back team to make it 1-1. For the American it was the fifth goal in the past three games. After that, the game became more entertaining, Schalke briefly increased the pressure and pushed for victory. But in the end, 1. FC Köln celebrated. Winning goal scorer Thielmann had been substituted on just a few minutes earlier.
It won’t be any easier for Schalke on the coming match day, the team will receive table leaders Bayern Munich on Sunday (3:30 p.m.; TV: Sky; live ticker SPIEGEL.de). Cologne will also face Hoffenheim on Sunday (6 p.m.).
