News : Spain, indelible mark (and Olympic notice) in the Podebrady European Championship

Martín and Pérez, individual silvers and European team champions

Spectacular. Simply brutal about the Spanish marchers in the Podebrady European. Podiums, individual golds, European team champions. The production of the Spanish athletes at the Polish event was a recital, an ode. We are going to take stock of all the successes achieved by a delegation that started with enthusiasm and ambition and that returns loaded with personal brands, metals, the best records of the season … and everything when there are just two months and little to start the Tokyo Olympics. Obviously there will be tougher rivals, there will be the always feared Chinese. But as a warning and as a sample of the work that is being done, nothing bad is coming.

Seventh title and two individual medals in the men’s 20km

The Spanish marching team won their seventh title, the third in a row, as European champion in the 20-kilometer event, after the second, third and fourth places signed this Sunday by Álvaro Martín, Diego García and Miguel Ángel López in the Czech city of Podebrady.

These results demonstrated the superiority of the Spanish team to which only he missed the individual victory, which went to the Swede Perseus Karlstrom with a time of 1h 18:54. Twenty seconds less than Álvaro Martín, who occupied second place with a time of 1h 19:14, the fourth best Spanish brand of all time, and twenty-five less than Diego García, who completed the podium with a time of 1h 19:19 .

He completed the outstanding performance of the Spanish team Miguel Ángel López, who crossed the finish line in fourth position with a time of 1h 19:25.

And it is that despite their magnificent performance the Spanish walkers could not with the strength that the Swede Karlstrom showed in the final kilometers of the test.

The Scandinavian who reached the last four kilometers in the company of Álvaro Martin and Diego García was little by little increasing the pace until he took down the two Spaniards.
