The Open: Shane Lowry is on course for his first major triumph
Golf pro Shane Lowry has the best chances after a course record to win the 148th British Open in Northern Ireland. The 32-year-old Irishman played an outstanding round of 63 on the par 71 course of the Northern Irish Royal Portrush Golf Club and continued his lead on the third day with a total of 197 strokes - so few had been needed for the first 54 holes ,
Before the final day Lowry has four strokes ahead of the Englishman Tommy Fleetwood (201). Third place is occupied by the American J.B. Holmes (203). For Lowry it would be the first triumph in a major tournament.
World number one leader Brooks Koepka of the USA and Olympic champion Justin Rose of England (both 204) still have chances to win at the $ 10.75 million (approximately € 9.5 million) tournament. Francesco Molinari will not be able to defend his title. The Italian is only in split 54th place after three laps and is already 18 shots behind Lowry.
US superstar Tiger Woods, Northern Ireland's local hero Rory McIlroy and the German amateur European champion Matthias Schmid had already failed after two days on the cut.
