News : The world record holder Gidey, goes down in Valencia for the War in Tigray
We warned a few days ago that Letesenbet Gidey, one of the outstanding and great favorites to win the women’s half marathon in Valencia, was not clear about her presence in the event because of the war that plagues her region of Ethiopia, Tigray. Unfortunately, the Ethiopian woman has not been able to finally leave the country to head to Valencia and it is one of the most sensitive casualties, along with that of a Geoffrey Kamworor who suffered an accident in summer (rather he was run over while training) and who has not been recovered in time.
In Tigray there are currently an armed conflict declared since last November 5 by the federal government against the rebel government of that region, whose capital is Mekele. After unilateral elections were held last December in the region, the central government was not recognized, which led to an offensive by the ENDF (Ethiopian National Defense Force, name of the Ethiopian Armed Forces ).
A real shame after his stellar performance at the Turia Stadium a few weeks ago, where he achieved the world record of 5,000 meters. We hope that this conflict can end as soon as possible and that peace be achieved.
