The 19th stage of the Tour de France was canceled on Friday due to miserable weather conditions on the descent of the Col de L'Iseran. The organizers announced this on Friday afternoon and stopped the race about 30 kilometers from the finish with immediate effect. Instead, the times were counted, which the drivers had driven on the summit of the Iseran. Accordingly, the Colombian Egan Bernal is now in the yellow jersey after an attack, which lost the French local hero Julian Alaphilippe after a slump in the rise at Iseran.
The demolition of the stage came quite suddenly. On the rapid descent broke Alaphilippe, Bernal and the other favorites to the German Emanuel Buchmann abruptly from their high speed, when they were informed by radio that the section ends prematurely.
A drive between the Col de L'Iseran to Tignes proved impossible, large clearing vehicles had to free the mountain of water mass, snow and hail. "It would have been too dangerous, they found a good solution, to take the time on top of the Iseran," said Bora Hansgrohe team boss Ralph Denk in the ARD.
Bernal is thus also rated as a stage winner. Buchmann drove at the same time with the other favorites Geraint Thomas and Steven Kruijswijk over the pass, thereby preserving his chances of a podium finish in Paris. Alaphilippe had lost about a minute to the group, it was about two minutes on Bernal. "Great performance from Emanuel Now there's tomorrow's big final battle tomorrow, everyone's going to throw everything in." Emanuel is not far from the podium, "Denk said. Just a few hours earlier, the sun had shone on the Col de L'Iseran, which is the roof of this tour at 2770 meters. Numerous amateur cyclists tormented the climb up and then drove back down. The latter was no longer possible for the pros after a break in the late afternoon.
The 22-year-old Bernal is the clear top favorite after his attack and the sudden demolition of the triumph at the 106th Tour de France. In yellow, he will contest the 20th stage to Val Thorens, where it will end up with a 33.4 kilometer final climb. His co-captains Thomas, Kruijswijk, Alaphilippe and Buchmann are still in wait. The Frenchman Thibaut Pinot had to get off in the first part of the stage, he is plagued by a hamstring in his left thigh.
