Tour de France 2019: Egan Bernal ahead of overall victory

Team Ineos' Egan Bernal has defended the yellow jersey for Val Thorens on the crucial 20th leg and will probably win in Paris on Sunday. On the final day, the overall leader is traditionally no longer attacked. Should they reach the finish tomorrow, Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) will win the green jersey and Romain Bardet (ag2r La Mondiale) the mountain jersey.

Emanuel Buchmann attacked shortly before the end of the race, but was overtaken after ten meters. Nevertheless, he advanced to fourth place in the classification. Because Julian Alaphilippe had lost the yellow jersey yesterday, fell today completely back and slipped in the overall ranking in fifth place. The stage winner was Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida).

The day before, the classification had been mixed up by the demolition of the 19th stage. After 89 of 126.5 kilometers, the race was ended because on the descent from the Col de l'Iseran hail a scree avalanche had blocked the road. The winner of the decision was Bernal, who had launched a successful attack before the demolition and thus took over the yellow jersey of Alaphilippe. The 22-year-old Colombian was 45 seconds ahead of Alaphilippe, Geraint Thomas slipped 1:03 minutes back to third.

Early on the short leg, six riders headed by Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) took a lead, but were quickly conceded by a 23-man chasing group. The peace did not last long and again five riders sat down again for Nibali, the tour winner of 2014. In the climb, the team Jumbo -Visma headed to the peloton and led the catch-up to bring the fourth-placed Steven Kruijswijk to the front. Laurens De Plus was increasingly emerging as a pacemaker.

Marc Soler attacked from the field and so increased the overall speed. So the peloton approached the top group more and more. But not all could follow: For the tenth overall, Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo), the pace was too high. The Australian fell out of the field, followed by Sagan in the green jersey behind. Also Alaphilippe showed significant weaknesses and fell back just 13 kilometers from the finish. Thomas passed the overall classification. Also Bardet, wearer of the mountain jersey let demolish.

A good eleven kilometers from the finish, Nibali took the lead at the top. Ilnur Sakarin (Team Katusha Alpecin) could not keep up and dropped back into the field. Soler from Team Movistar took up the chase. Shortly before the finish, the group closed for the yellow jersey, but attacks are missing. Emanuel Buchmann attacked briefly, but was caught directly again.
