+++ 22.06.2019: Kuntz before European Championship duel with Austria: "Have it in your own hands" +++

U21 national coach Stefan Kuntz does not want to deal with the pitfalls of the mode and a possible retirement before the final European Championship group match against Austria. "We have it in our own hands, that's the best starting position you can have," said Kuntz before the match on Sunday evening (9 pm / ZDF) in Udine. With a win or a draw, the German U21 footballers would certainly be in the semifinals. In a defeat would threaten despite premature two wins and 9: 2 goals in two games premature Aus.

"We think we want to win our game or at least score points, so we do not have to rely on others, we have it in our own hands," said defender Timo Baumgartl: "If we beat Serbia's performance again, then we have a good chance to win too. "

Kuntz expects a strong opponent. "Of course, Austria can move into the semi-finals with a win," he said. Both countries associate a "positive rivalry". Also Baumgartl expects some explosiveness in the duel, in which Austria competes with six players from the two German Bundesligen in the squad. "It's about progress, the Austrians are our neighbors," said the Stuttgart.

+++ 22.06.2019: Austria U21 looking forward to Germany: "derby character" +++

For Austria U21 national coach Werner Gregoritsch, the duel against Germany at the European Football Championship is a game with "derby character". "My son plays in Augsburg with Marco Richter, and we have often sat together with the parents," said Gregoritsch with a view to his son Michael before the European Championship group game on Sunday (21.00 clock / ZDF) in Udine. "I wish him all the best, he can score many goals, but not against us," he said with a grin over Richter.

The development of Luca Waldschmidt, who was formerly teammate of his son at Hamburger SV, he had followed closely. "I am particularly pleased for her," Gregoritsch said about Richter and Waldschmidt. "They do not have such a big name, but they play rude and carefree here."

Austrian captain Philipp Lienhart is also in contact with club colleague Waldschmidt during the European Championship. "Luca has brutal quality, is very dangerous," he said.

He knows the German team very well, as he pursues the Bundesliga, explained Gregoritsch. "We know very well that the game against Germany is a very difficult task, because the team is very strong at the European Championship," he said. "We know that we are clear outsiders." Germany would already draw a group victory and thus secure semi-final entry.

+++ 22.06.2019: "Like a bad dream" - Early European Championship shocks England's U21 +++

England's Under-21 footballer and her coach Aidy Boothroyd have suffered harsh criticism after the early European Championship finals. "The old English history of tournament failure has again been a bad dream," wrote the Telegraph on Saturday after 2-4 (0-0) against Romania. With zero points after two games, the team has no chance of progress. "Two defeats, six goals conceded and a gruesome collection of individual mistakes", judged the "Telegraph".

Two years ago, England's football dominated in all age groups. The Young Lions were 2017 U19 European Champions, U20 World Champions and U17 World Champions, lost in the U17 European Championship final and retired in the Under-21 European Championship in the semifinals. This year, the U17 failed as the U21 in the group stage, for the Under-19 Championship and the U20 World Cup as defending champion, the team was not even qualified.

There was criticism after the U21, especially in the lineup of Boothroyd, who surprisingly not offered among other playmaker Phil Foden from the beginning. "Aidy Boothroyd's lineup poker fails, England's U21 flies out of the European Championship," wrote "Independent". Nonetheless, the 48-year-old declined to resign: "I'm not going anywhere, so if they do, they'll have to kick me out."

+++ 21.06.2019: Off for England and Croatia at U21 European Championship +++

England's junior football is eliminated at the U21 European Championships after the second defeat. In the second group match, the team led by Phil Foden of Manchester City defeated on Friday evening in Cesena against Romania in a turbulent final phase with 2: 4 (0: 0). George Puscas (76 minutes / penalty), Ianis Hagi (85.) and Florinel Coman (88./90.+3) scored the goals for the Romanians. Demarai Gray (79.) and Tammy Abraham (86.) were only able to equalize for England twice. Because France won against Croatia in the evening thanks to Moussa Dembelé's (8th minute) goal 1-0 (1-0), it is already clear that England and Croatia have no chance of progressing.

+++ 22.06.2019: German U21 opponents Austria does not want to be a "cannon fodder" +++

Austria has little hope for the knockout round before the final group match at the U21 European Championship against Germany. "I can judge it, do not want to be euphoric and knock big talk," said coach Werner Gregoritsch, who sees his team in a duel with the defending champion on Sunday (21.00 clock / ZDF) in Udine only as an outsider. "The Germans are sure that they will win the third game 6: 1, 3: 1, so we're more or less cannon fodder for them."

Austria has scored three points from two games in the European Football Championship and needs a victory against Germany to have one more chance of winning the semi-finals. On the other hand, the DFB-Elf will be enough to make it 3: 1 against Denmark and 6: 1 against Serbia. "They show everything that makes Germany, in terms of preparation, tactical variants and the play area," Gregoritsch praised the DFB selection.

The events in the other groups could still be important. The possible scenarios before the last German preliminary round match on Sunday:

Germany (6 points, 9: 2 goals) comes into the semifinals ...

... in a win or draw against Austria as group winners.

... in a defeat with a maximum of one goal difference, if at the same time Denmark against Serbia wins, as group winners.

The best runner-up is determined by the following criteria: - higher score - better goal difference - higher goals scored - lower total penalty points based on the yellow and red cards received in all group matches - better ranking in the U21 coefficient rankings for the final draw was used

+++ 21.06.2019: U21 cheers with the "beer captain" - Waldschmidt: "Have a little fun" +++

Luca Waldschmidt and Marco Richter get along - not only on the pitch. Also their common predilection for Schlager unites the two offensive players of the German U21 national team and inspired them even to a common goal celebration. Based on the song "Bierkapitän" by Markus Becker and Richard Bier, the two footballers cheer at the European Championships with a gut gesture and an imaginary hat, which they draw in front of each other. "This is a catchy tune of us actually," reported the Augsburg judge on the history.

With a total of seven goals from two games, the two strikers are currently particularly successful at the European Championships - and so the "beer captain" is now running after the games in the cabin - supported by Schlager fan Timo Baumgartl. "If there's a bit of music going on we can have fun for a little while and be happy, but then things will continue right away," Waldschmidt said with a grin.

Even captain Jonathan Tah and Benjamin Henrichs, who are otherwise not on Schlager, sang one or the other line after the 6-1 victory against Serbia. "We played that again for Baumi, Marco and Luca," reported Henrichs. Tah said, "I say so, I've been through it, it's not really my taste in music." Judge is nevertheless confident: "I think the two are getting on the taste."
