Union Berlin - Made for Köpenick - Sport
Neven Subotic, 30, is to guide the young players of the league club Union Berlin.
Recently, after the first home game of the 1st FC Union, made a photo round, the sat up. In the public transport, that Berlin institution, which provides often indignation among indigenous people because of the multiple mishaps, was a great, sporty man to discover, which one would not have suspected there after a Bundesliga match. His name: Neven Subotic, 30, professional - and since this summer in the service of the Bundesliga team from Köpenick.
It's episodes like this that are already raving about club staff. Subotic fit like the proverbial fist of an eye to union, they say. He is extremely social, free of luxuries or allure that exists in this business too. Especially if somebody, like Subotic, has twice won the trophy and the championship - with one of the league's top clubs, who will play in Köpenick at 6.30 pm this Saturday: Borussia Dortmund. For nine years Subotic played as a central defender at BVB, who is currently with six points and 8: 2 goals leaders of the Bundesliga. "Defensively this will be an adventure," said Subotic on Wednesday. "When Sancho comes running at a felt speed of 200km / h, (Marco) Reus runs deep and Paco (Alcácer) is still looking for a gap, we can not afford the mistakes we had in Augsburg."
There, in Augsburg, Union brought after all the first Bundesliga point in its history. This was of great importance to the Unioner spirit, having beaten RB Lepizig 0-4 on the opening weekend of the season. For Subotic, previously employed at AS St. Étienne, the match was also personally important. Because the first game in the new dress was also the first after a three-month injury break - he had to fight with his knee.
"Playing through 90 minutes in the heat was a tough test," Subotic said, reporting that he had coped with it the day after. Now it's about "making as many games as possible" in order to develop further: "I mean team-specific, not personally related to me." What Union promised from Subototic, who moved from France to Köpenick on a free transfer, is obvious: experience. Only the players from two other clubs had collected together less Bundesliga routine before the season than the Union with their total of 1 082 inserts: Fortuna Dusseldorf (1 023) and co-climbers SC Paderborn (123). And that, although Union currently has 31 players left. Subotic, with 209 appearances for Mainz, Dortmund and Cologne, is one of only four other members of the Bundesliga to make more than one hundred appearances - alongside Marcel Schmiedebach, Christian Gentner and Anthony Ujah. Passing on experience, Subotic said in an analogy before the season in the club magazine, meant above all, counter-steer, when inexperienced players "emotions gain the upper hand".
In spite of Gentner and substitute Ujah, that was exactly what played a decisive role in the 0: 4 against RB Leipzig. In the end, the bankruptcy was not as long in the clothes of the newcomer as it had been to be feared. This was, perhaps from Köpenick, perhaps the most valuable knowledge of the second matchday.
"In Augsburg, we showed a development that was absolutely necessary," says Subotic, they have arrived. Nevertheless, he looks at the duel with BVB, for which he played 263 competitive games, with realism: "The chances are not particularly high, but they exist." And even though he feels quite stable in Borussia ("BVB is a part of my being"), he promises to "work for a surprise".
In the past season, the Berliners would have almost succeeded such a surprise. In the second round of the DFB Cup, the BVB won against Union 3-2, by a penalty kick in injury time of extra time. For Union's goals was provided by Sebastian Polter, 28, who has a lot to look at in terms of ecological footprint in the S-Bahn driver Subotic. Polter lives 500 meters from the stadium, he sometimes goes by bike, but often also by car to work. "Actually a bit shameful," says Polter. Whereby he can concentrate in his own car and regenerate. Time is for it: Even in Köpenick one is sometimes stuck in traffic.
