US Open: Angelique Kerber fails in turn one at Kristina Mladenovic
Angelique Kerber retired at the US Open in the first round. The winner of 2016 was defeated by Kristina Mladenovic, 5: 7, 6: 0, 4: 6 in her opening match of the world's number 54. It seemed Mladenovic in the meantime struck, she had apparently to fight with a back injury.
For about an hour, favorite Kerber and French Mladenovic met at eye level. Kerber took their opponent directly from the match at the start of the match, but then missed the opportunity to increase to 3: 0. Instead, Mladenovic managed the rebreak and later, at the score of 5: 5, the second break.
Then the match experienced a break. In the second set, Mladenovic was visibly impaired, apparently suffering pain in the back. At the score of 0: 3 she could be treated longer without being as mobile as at the beginning of the match. Again and again she caught herself in the cross. After a little more than half an hour, the second set had run.
In the final round Mladenovic seemed more agile again. She even managed a quick break. Kerber fought his way back into the match, also because she underwent fewer unforced errors than Mladenovic. At the score of 4: 4 she conceded the decisive break.
For Kerber it is the next setback in a titleless year. In Wimbledon she was in the second round, at the French Open even in the first round eliminated. Their best result in a Grand Slam tournament in 2019 remains the knockout round at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year. In July, she was also out of the top ten, currently she is the 14th in the world.
