Julia Görges and Andrea Petković are in the second round of the US Open. Görges won on Tuesday against Natalia Wichljanzewa after a false start 1: 6, 6: 1, 7: 6 (7: 1) and won for the fourth time in a row, their opening match in New York. At the score of 5: 6 in the third set Görges fended off a match point, after two hours, the German number two took their first opportunity to match win.
Petković, however, reached the first time since 2016 again the second round in Flushing Meadows. The former top ten player from Darmstadt defeated the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu 6: 3, 6: 4. The two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitová from the Czech Republic is now waiting for the 31-year-old. Positioned 26 Görges gets it to do with wildcard starter Francesca di Lorenzo from the United States.
Earlier on Monday, Laura Siegemund won her opening game. Former world number one Angelique Kerber was eliminated in the first round of the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season. She lost to Frenchman Kristina Mladenovic 5: 7, 6: 0, 4: 6 and thus received her third defeat in the series. In Flushing Meadows, Kerber could not benefit from an injury to her opponent and had to give up after 2:24 hours beaten.
Kerber actually got off to a good start against Mladenovic and immediately took the serve off the Frenchwoman. But because she also had to give up her service after that, the first sentence was immediately open again. Although the German number one overall seemed a bit more dominant, but Kerber could not convert their slight superiority into enough points.
