News : VfL Bochum gambled away victory – sport
Setback in the final phase: promotion candidate VfL Bochum loses 3-1 to SV Darmstadt 98 despite being in the lead and missed the premature promotion.
VfL Bochum gambled away a decisive victory in the promotion battle in the second Bundesliga. The leader of the table lost 3-1 (0-0) at Darmstadt 98 on Monday evening, despite leading, and after his ninth defeat of the season has to watch out for the pursuers again. They are nine points ahead of third place in relegation, but Bochum is the only team in the top five of the league to have no catch-up game. Robert Tesche (74th) had put Bochum in the lead. Christian Clemens (79th) and striker Serdar Dursun (81st) turned the game around with a double strike. With his 21st goal of the season, Dursun made the decision (86th), Darmstadt can no longer relegate mathematically. Bochum, which had previously celebrated four wins in five encounters, had advantages, but the guests did not use their chances. On the contrary, shortly after the break, Bochum’s goalkeeper Patrick Drewes had to parry several times. The representative of regular goalkeeper Manuel Riemann (broken middle hand) had had little to do up to then – that changed in a memorable final phase.
