News : Videos, photos and results Val d’Aran by UTMB® 2021

With the first edition of Val d’Aran by UTMB we have witnessed the birth of a new creature, or monster (in a good way), depending on how you look at it. The force of Ultra Trail Mont-Blanc (UTMB), the mythical French test, considered by many to be the most important Trail in the world, arrives in this small region of the Catalan Pyrenees to deploy a franchise of its great project: UTMB World Series.

Almost twenty years ago, in Chamonix, an association of runners was born who created a race, with a few participants, but which quickly became an event of pilgrimage international, where the best mountain athletes in the world run… and also where they forge their legend.

Today that giant that is UTMB is a series of races, of different distances and with starts in up to three countries, all around Chamonix. It has grown so much, there are so many who come from all over the world to run … And so many, also, those who are left without a place that, in evolution, UTMB International was born, the UTMB organization turned into a company and that has set its objective in a UTMB World series calendar that will allow access to places to run in Chamonix.

This is where Viella appears. And Xavi Pocino, the race director, who in our recent interview explained to us that they had been working since 2018 to get to this point, right now, with four races practically simultaneously: 162Km VDA, 105Km CDH, 55Km PDA and SKY, a 15Km Trail. A personal initiative of Mr. Pocino himself to convince Catherine and Michel Poletti, the creators and owners of UTMB that their land, the Val d’Aran, met the demanding conditions of UTMB to gain their trust.

With more than 3000 participants, from more than 70 countries, and becoming at a stroke the mountain race with the most participation in the Spanish state, we can get an idea of the force with which this ultra resistance test starts.

In these days of the race, we have seen a Valley of Aran with a lot of movement of people, with the epicenter in Viella, and where the tests Torn dera Val d’Aran (VDA), Camins d’Hèr (CDH), Peades d’Aigua (PDA) and SKY (the shortest and with start and finish in Pla de Beret, next to Baqueira), they have had spectacular start and finish, also with the ever-electric “Depa” one of the most famous race speakers in the country.

The final podium of the most important race on the lineup, the VDA, has reflected the open nature of this test, where adding the winning quintet of men and women, their origins were from the most varied countries, up to 8 different ones: Romania , Australia, Spain, Sweden, Japan, Canada, France or Italy.

With everything done, Xavi Pocino, shares us with LBDC as he moves away from the finish area down a small street in Viella: “For us, not even in the best of our team’s dreams did we think that we would have achieved what we have achieved. I think that people are satisfied, they have discovered the Val d’Aran, that many people did not know. And that people leave happy, for us it is very important … and this, both the first and the last and for me the last is more important than the first.
