Women's World Cup 2019: Netherlands win against Sweden after extra time

European champion Netherlands has reached the final of the 2019 World Cup in France. In the Groupama Stadium of Lyon, the Dutch won 1-0 (0-0) after extra time against Germany defeated Sweden and now meet on top favorite USA. At the second World Cup participation Oranje is in the final for the first time. The decisive goal was scored by Jackie Groenen (99th minute).

After a very weak first half, in which Sweden had slight advantages and the only significant scoring opportunities by Stina Blackstenius (13) and Lina Hurtig (37), the level was not much better after the break. This was mainly due to the Dutch women, where no game idea was recognized. After all, the goalkeepers now had something to do: First, Sari van Veenendaal deflected a shot from Nilla Fischer on the post (56.). On the other hand, Hedvig Lindahl was on point with a header from Vivianne Miedema - the ball slapped the crossbar (64 ').

The longer the second semifinals lasted, the more the game lived on the tension, but especially with the Dutch women the nervousness was noticeable on this unusually large football stage right up to the final stages. Substitute Shanice van de Sanden forced Lindahl to another glittering extra-time stoppage and added to the extra time the neutral would have hoped for the first-ever semi-final between the United States and England.

In the extension, however, the Swedish built physically and so the European champions were better. Van de Sanden was on the right side ever stronger and the defense to Fischer was increasingly under pressure. Groenen hit the ball by chance, but her low shot from 20 yards made it unstoppable for Lindahl in the left corner.

After this performance, the role of favorites in the final on Sunday (17 clock Liveticker SPIEGEL ONLINE) in Lyon even more clearly distributed. Defending champion USA is at any time in a position to put the Netherlands under pressure with the available athletics. In the match for third place Sweden will meet England on Saturday in Nice.
