Women's World Cup: Germany in the individual review after the break against Sweden

Germany's women footballers have to say goodbye to the World Cup in France. The DFB team lost in the quarter-final against Sweden. Although the German team started well and was led by a well-played goal by Lina Magull in the lead - but in the end defeated the two-time World Champion 1: 2.
This was especially due to the wobbly back four with the two center-backs Marina Hegering and Sara Doorsoun. So far, the German defensive was the only team at this World Cup without a clean sheet, but the defense was already in the games before the weak point. Sweden took advantage of this now.
No factor was Dzsenifer Marozsán's comeback after a toe break. She came in at half-time and did not seem fully operational yet. As disappointing the DFB-Aus is, there were bright spots in this team - also in the game against Sweden. Sara Däbritz or Giulia Gwinn is the future.
Read the individual review of all the players and coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg here.
Almuth Schult (goal): After 382 minutes of tournament it had happened, with Schult had to grab the hitherto last goalkeeper keeper of this World Cup for the first time. But the number one one must not chalk the hit for the meantime 1: 1 in the 22nd Minute, Schult was surprised by a major positional error of Marina Hegering. Even in 1: 2 Schult still outstanding superior from a header and had the rebound then no chance. In the final phase she kept the game open with a few parries. But that was not enough for the rescue.
Giulia Gwinn (defense): That the German team has to say goodbye to the World Cup was not due to the 19-year-olds. As in the previous games, Gwinn was runner-like and fiercely opposed. But Sweden was stronger than the previous opponents and offensive, Gwinn was used defensively. In the offensive, the future Bayern player rarely appeared. But you will hear a lot from her: She is a winner of this World Cup. Gwinn could once become the face of this team.
Sara Doorsoun (defense): The Wolfsburg woman could also give the team no security. On the contrary, her duel was too weak, too often Doorsoun went down against the strong Swedes, she was a constant troublemaker for her own team. Attacking Doorsoun fell on too long passes. Your average World Cup ends with a disappointing conclusion. It is impossible to imagine that Doorsoun and Hegering will form the duo in central defense in the future.
Marina Hegering (defense): In football wins and loses a team together. But you can not ignore the fatal positional error of Hegering before the equalizer. Hegering had completely misjudged a long pass. It was not her first mistake at this tournament, but this time he was punished by a strong opponent. With the compensation the DFB selection seemed unsettled, also Hegering let himself dribble again and again. The 29-year-old should help Germany with her header and construction game, in the end you will remember especially their dropouts.
Carolin Simon (defense, until 43th minute): After three non-starting games, Simon was allowed to start again, and what can one say: It was a memorable performance by the Olympique Lyon player. Inaccurate passes and positional errors - she was a constant threat to their own back four. These uncertainties are unknown to Simon. When she made another drop at the end of the first half, there were "Simon, Simon" cheers from the German fans. Shortly thereafter, the game for the 26-year-old was over when she had to come out struck.
Leonie Maier (defense, from 43 minutes): That for Simon not Verena Schweers (170 minute World Cup), but Maier came, surprised. Maier had not played a minute at the World Cup, and she immediately noticed. In the 1: 2 of the Swedes she was missing the assignment, as she stood in the header of Fridolina Rolfo too far away. Then Stina Blackstenius met by Abstauber. The Bayern player was until the end no support for the wobbly back four.
Alexandra Popp (midfield): In their 101st international match Popp was first the breakwater. The Wolfsburg native came to the defense immediately before the defense and brought with her head ball strength safety at high balls. Her powerful finish with the head could have needed the team at the latest after the residue in the Sturmspitze. Again and again, the outdoor players sought Lea Schüller with high passages, but that is not a weapon in the air. Only in the final phase Popp went all the way forward. Too late.
Sara Däbritz (midfield): The 24-year-old is tireless. This feature saw the fans before the 1: 0, as Däbritz imitated a German ball loss, recaptured the ball and took up speed. She dribbled her way through and played a dream pass on Magull - the opening goal was perfect. It was Däbritz's fourth goal participation in the tournament (three goals, one assist). It is not exaggerated to congratulate Paris Saint-Germain on a strong purchase. At the top French club Däbritz will play from next season; she will remain one of the defining faces of the national team.
Svenja Huth (midfield): Huth stands at the end of this tournament also symbolic of a weakness of the German team. Out of the game went out too little, too rarely created the eleven combination football opportunities, Huth has as a wing player in their share. Only in the final phase, she flanked sharp into the box, it would almost equal the balance. There should have been more of such actions.
Linda Dallmann (midfield, up to 46th minute): The Essene had played until the quarterfinals only 31 minutes at this tournament. That was against South Africa, a decent performance, but also against the weakest opponent at this World Cup. Dallmann's effort was a surprise, and she really could not convince. At first still very lively, especially in interaction with Magull, after the 1: 1 it became more and more inconspicuous. At half-time she had to go out for Marozsán.
Dzsenifer Marozsán (midfield, from 46th minute): Three weeks ago, the star had broken her toe in the opening match against China, now she had returned for a halftime. And one already asked the question: What can one expect from Marozsán so shortly after her toe break? The coach later said Marozsán had met her expectations. What the head coach did not say: A real help for the team was not the 27-year-old, she could not initiate any special moments on the offensive. No, that was not the Marozsán who worship football fans.
Lina Magull (attack): The Bayern player has played at this World Cup in the foreground, her dreamlike goal to 1: 0 by Seitfallzieher was another proof. Magull is a brave gambler who likes to risk, but as the game progressed, the 24-year-old dipped more and more. The German offensive game came to a standstill. Nevertheless, Magull should remember this World Cup with positive moments.
Lea Schüller (attack, until 69th minute): The young striker works football, she is run strong. But the 21-year-old was physically inferior to the Swedish opponents, as she was against Nigeria. Schüller may have great potential, but at this World Cup she did not keep up at a higher level.
Lena Oberdorf (midfield, from 69th minute): The 17-year-old now suffered the first low point of her young career, and one may hardly mention that, but Oberdorf could have prevented him. Shortly before closing she forgot freestanding and headed centimeters by the gate. However, the awarded opportunity does not change the fact that the versatile Oberdorf belongs to the future in the German midfield.
Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (national coach): With Linda Dallmann, Leonie Maier and Dzsenifer Marozsán, the head coach used three players in the quarter-finals, who had previously heard only a minor role in this World Cup. That was already surprising at this level, especially as a defensive strength like Melanie Leupolz could have been an important support against the strong Swedes in the switching game. Also, the replacement of the obviously not yet fit Marozsán acts in the review as a mistake, because it was really critical at halftime at the score of 1: 1 not yet for the German team.
