Women's World Cup: USA throw host France out

France failed at the World Cup in their own country in the quarterfinals at the United States. The French defeated the defending champion in Paris 1: 2 (0: 1), the dream of the first world title is over for the co-favorites. Both US goals scored superstar Megan Rapinoe (5th and 65th minute), shortened for France Wendie Renard (81). In the semi-finals, the USA meet England on Tuesday.
Both teams were considered to be the biggest title contenders in this World Cup, the expectations of this duel were correspondingly high - and the players did justice to them. Before sold-out scenery in the Prinzenpark they let the ball run remarkably fast, technically and tactically the game was on top level, and she quickly experienced her first goal.
The hit resulted from a free kick. Rapinoe was to the left of the penalty area and produced a mixture of shot and cross. The ball flew past US teammate Julie Ertz and through the legs of France captain Amandine Henry in goal. Rapinoe celebrated her goal in a pose that should be remembered as one of the images of this World Cup.
Although the US subsequently came up with opportunities through Alex Morgan (13 ') and Rapinoe (16'), the longer the game went on, the more defensive they became. France controlled the events and came to a number of degrees, which were never seriously dangerous.
After the 2: 0, the US must tremble again
That should change in the second half. At first it was the turn of the USA, who came within three shots after Samantha Mewis, Tobin Heath and Morgan to equal three chances. But then France pushed for the balance. Eugénie Le Sommer missed from a tight angle the possible 1: 1 (58th), shortly after Valérie Gauvin failed with a header (64th).
But the US always seems to have the right answer at this World Cup. Just when the balance seemed close, the Americans scored to 2: 0. The strong Heath played a double on the right with Morgan, then almost made it to the baseline and brought the ball to the freestanding Rapinoe, who finished. The preliminary decision was not that - the US had to tremble again.
After a free kick headed France defender Renard the ball to 1: 2 in goal, it was already her fourth goal in this World Cup. Previously, Le Sommer had failed US keeper Alyssa Naeher (79 '). In the final phase, the French brought several balls high in the US penalty area - a clear chance, however, did not jump out.
