Powerlifter what kind of sport – Powerlifting: exercises, rules, standards, competitions

Powerlifting (from the English powerlifting; power – power + lift – to lift) is a speed-power sport. The athlete’s goal is puerlifting is the lifting of the maximum weight in the sum of three competitive exercises (which is why it is sometimes called powerlifting).

Competitive movements in powerlifting: Squats with a barbell on the shoulders, bench press, deadlift.

Unlike bodybuilding, an athlete’s appearance and body composition do not matter.

The division of athletes at competitions is carried out by weight categories. During the performance, the indicators of athletes of the same weight category are compared. With the same indicators in the total of triathlon, the lighter athlete is recognized as the winner.

When summing up the total in the absolute weight category (i.e. when athletes of different weight categories compete with each other), the Wilks formula, the Schwartz / Malone formula (most often used in the IPA, RPS, XPC federations) or the Glossbrenner formula (WPC-WPO) can be used …

To hold competitions and unite powerlitters, several organizations were created, called

powerlifting federations. The number of such federations in the world is quite large. At the moment, the most massive and authoritative is the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). This fact is mainly due to the fact that IPF is a member of the World Games Association and the General Assembly of International Sports Federations. Moreover, since 2004, the IPF has been officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee and is subject to the rules of WADA – the World Anti-Doping Association. But successful athletes always say that the main incentive, and the incentive appears only in high-quality gyms where there is everything, for example, fitness with a swimming pool in Lyubertsy – an ideal option for a person who wants not only to practice but also to achieve results in sports.

Historically important points for powerlifting around the world are:

1964 год - включение в программу Паралимпийских игр как "тяжелая атлетика"
1992 год - включение в программу Паралимпийских игр как "пауэрлифтинг"
2000 год - включение женских категорий в соревновательную программу Паралимпийских игр

Historically important points for powerlifting in Russia are:

1987 год - образование Федерации атлетизма СССР, в состав которой входила Комиссия по силовому троеборью
1990 год - образование самостоятельной Федерации пауэрлифтинга СССР, являющейся членом IPF.
В настоящее время Федерация пауэрлифтинга России — единственная аккредитованная в Госкомспорте из всех существующих организаций подобного рода в РФ.

Due to the growing popularity of the bench press, most federations have developed bit standards and competitions are held separately in this movement.

As of now, the following equipment is allowed in powerlifting:

бинты на колени и на запястья
майка для жима лежа
майки для приседаний и становой тяги
комбинезон для приседания
комбинезон для становой тяги

Powerlifting equipment was created with the goal of protecting athletes from injury. But it was soon noticed that at the same time, due to the stiffness of the fabric, it is capable of increasing the result by 5-15 kg in each movement. It was this fact that marked the beginning of the “arms race in powerlifting.” Modern equipment increases the athlete’s performance by 50 kg, and sometimes even 150 kg, in some cases even more.

This fact, as well as the total use of doping at the amateur level in the absence of effective control, have caused a rapid increase in powerlifting standards over the past 10 years.

Powerlifting and IOC

The large number of federations and rules makes it nearly impossible to include powerlifting in the Olympic Games. However, powerlifting is part of the World Games sponsored by the International Olympic Committee. The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), organizing international competitions, strives to standardize them and include powerlifting in the Olympic Games.

Powerlifting Federation

The number of international powerlifting organizations is constantly growing. But, despite the decentralization that is inherent in world powerlifting, the most famous and popular is the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). The IPF is considered the only international powerlifting organization that is a member of the World Games Association and the General Assembly of International Sports Federations. All other organizations that are called “international” are not recognized by the world’s leading sports organizations, therefore their status remains uncertain from the point of view of world sports practice.

In 2004, after a long process, IPF was recognized by the IOC. In accordance with the IOC’s anti-doping policy, the IPF has signed the WADA Code. These steps, according to experts, are ongoing measures towards the recognition of powerlifting as an Olympic sport. As of October 1, 2007, 108 countries of the world have become IPF members.
